Intergenerational interaction between year 10 (14 - 15 year olds) secondary school students from Dowdales School in Dalton-in-Furness and local residents over 50 years of age. Occurred 28th November 2018 and thereafter every 4th Wednesday of each month.
Grub & Games - Building Bridges is a monthly event that is held at the Dalton Community Association Centre (the Drill Hall) in Nelson Street Dalton from 11.00am to 12.30. Every 4th Wednesday in each month currently excludes May 2019 due to whit holidays. .
Year 10 students from Dowdales Secondary School in Dalton visit the centre and interact with residents over the age of 50. There are table top games including draughts, dominoes, scrabble, cards and quizzes that all play in smaller groups of three's or four's.
The objective is to reduce misconceptions of attitudes and behaviours between generations and encourage interactivity between them not just in the sessions but beyond them into the wider community. A free soup and sandwich lunch is served, initially for the over 50's but at the request of the older group also now available to students free of charge should they wish to take it. The partnership has been developed between Compass in Cumbria/Age UK South Lakeland, Dalton Community Association, Dowdales School and Cumbria County Council who are providing funding for the venue and food. Students from Dowdales School can use their involvement as part of their community activity requirements for their Citizenship O Level Course which accounts for 25% of their mark towards the qualification.
