Barrow and District Credit Union is an ethical, not for profit financial co-operative serving our members in South West Cumbria with savings and loans facilities. It took us two and a half years and many hours of hard work to set up our Credit Union. Legally, credit union members must have something that joins them together – a Common Bond. Our Common Bond originally included everyone who resided or worked within the Borough of Barrow in Furness.
Our office in Barrow in Furness opened on 22 February 2013 and interest in and support from the local community was outstanding with 100 people joining in the first few weeks. There was also a great deal of interest from the areas outside the Borough and, because the South Lakeland Credit Union had not then been set up, we received approval to extend our Common Bond to cover the areas from just outside Barrow and along to Grange. We have continued to grow from strength to strength and we now have around 1,000 members.
EdenSave Credit Union is now also a reality and South Lakeland Credit Union is about to open for business. Millom Credit Union has recently joined forces with Whitehaven & Egremont Credit Union and Allerdale and Cleator Moor Credit Unions have also got together.
Since opening, we have had a great record of saving and helping our members to provide a better future not just for themselves, but also for their families, their children and their grandchildren. Barrow & District Credit Union is all about ordinary people teaming up and working together in our community for the common good. We have already expanded our product range to cater for all sections of the community, for example, payroll deduction schemes, loyalty loans and flexi loans. Details of all our offerings can be found on our website.
We seek to help local people move their finances from the commercial arena, where profit is the name of the game, back to the community where you all are the owners and the beneficiaries. We aim to keep your finances in the community for both your own and the community’s benefit.
Our savers benefit and help others. Our collective savings provide the means of granting loans to members, when necessary. After paying expenses, which we try very hard to keep as low as possible, and providing for reserves, we distribute any remaining surplus each year to our members in the form of a dividend.
We are extremely proud of our Credit Union as it is an excellent example of people helping people in our own community to build a better future together.
So, if you are not already a member, what are you waiting for? We offer an easy way to save as well as a convenient and affordable way to borrow. So please come and join us!
